Weather & Disaster Management

Every year natural disasters, like floods, fires, hurricanes, and earthquakes challenge agricultural production.   Agriculture relies on the weather, climate, and water availability to thrive and it is easily impacted by natural events and disasters.

" Worst floods in past century"

August 2018, Kerala, India experienced the worst floods in the state's history .

Crops in 45,000 hectares of farmland are damaged .

Over 200,000 farmers suffered losses of  INR1000 crores(USD150 Million).

WEATHER & CLIMATE

  • Weather and Climate influence or impact every facet of life on the Earth.  They are inextricable parts of urban and rural water quantity and quality, field and tree crops, transportation, stormwater, wastewater, wildfires, public health, urban and rural infrastructure, and many other societal sectors.

  • Extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall and snowfall, heat waves, and cyclones, and hurricanes cause flooding, public health emergencies, and storm surge and wind damage.

  • Extreme climate events such as wet or dry spells persistent for months or years cause waterlogging and resultant flooding or droughts which have devastating consequences at all human scales from the individual to the international.  Agricultural production can suffer greatly because of these persistent floods and droughts.  These consequences can also affect food and feed prices, and intra- and inter-national trade, and can become catalysts for intra- or international conflicts.

  • Human-induced climate change is projected to exacerbate these and other impacts of weather and climate.

  • Climate variability and change-driven ocean circulation and temperature changes, and consequent changes in ocean chemical properties and primary production, substantially impact marine life and catches of fish and crustaceans such as shrimp.

  • Useful prediction of weather at a few hours to a few days lead times, the climate at one season to ten years lead times, and weather and climate impacts on various economic sectors can help in the adaptation of local, regional, national, and international economies.

  • Our weather and climate experts have over 30 years’ experience in satellite remote sensing of water and ecosystems using passive and active sensors; weather and soil moisture simulations with state of the art models; climate variability and change analysis, simulations, and prediction; analysis, simulation, and prediction of climate impacts on worldwide water resources, agriculture, inland water-borne transportation, hydroelectricity generation, and fisheries; and analysis of socio-economic and political consequences of climate variability and change.

  • We can provide customized weather, climate, and sectoral impacts data and information at spatial scales ranging from local to global.  Worldwide dryness-wetness outlooks at one season to five years lead times is one example.  We can also provide multidecadal climate and impacts projections based on simulations and predictions with IPCC-class climate models.
